Some houses try to hide the fact
That children shelter there
Mine boasts of it quite openly
The signs are everywhere
Smears are on the windows
Smudges on the walls
I guess I should apologise
For toys strewn on the floor
But, I sat down with the children
And we laughed and played and read
And if the doorbell doesn’t shine
Their eyes will shine instead
There’s on thing of which I’m sure
These children are on loan
One day they’re always underfoot
Next thing you know, they’re gone
But when at times I have to choose
The one job, or the other
I’d love to be a home-maker
But first I’ll be a mother
